In my opinion I think that schools should have regular soda machines. Every Oklahoma elementary, middle, and high school serves diet soda, water and flavored water, in accordance with the federal Healthy Schools program. The choices are supposedly a healthier choice than regular soda; however the ingredients in diet soda have been known to cause several diseases.
According to Dr. Janet Hull, the creator of the Aspartame Detox Program, aspartame, an artificial sweetener used in diet sodas, is linked to headaches, dizziness, attention difficulties, slurred speech and vision loss. Dr. Hull also maintains that aspartame also increases appetite for sweet foods. Although I agree that soda is not really great for you, I would much rather drink regular soda than diet.
I think a healthier alternative to diet sodas would be regular soda, juice, milk and water. Bethany Johnson, a 17-year-old Webster senior said that she’d much rather have regular soda rather than diet soda. Johnson also said that diet soda is nasty and that she believes that soda sales in schools would go up if regular soda was sold. Johnson also said, “Diet soda is worse than regular pop”. Johnson said she believes that regular soda is healthier.
Next time you think about buying a diet soda, saving your money would be saving your life.
